Dr. Mary Walton
Dr. Walton was born in Raleigh, North Carolina. She is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She received her BS in pre-dental studies in 1984 and her DDS in 1987. After a 2 year hospital dentistry residency at the University of Virginia, she attended the University of Michigan for her Master of Sciences in Orthodontics.
She served for 12 years as a clinical instructor at the University of Michigan Department of Orthodontics while maintaining a large private practice in orthodontics in Ann Arbor, Michigan. During that time, she also served 6 years on the Board of Directors of the Michigan Association of Orthodontists and was actively involved with the Michigan Orthodontic Alumni Association.
In 2003, Dr. Walton sold her private practice and relocated to Cary, North Carolina in order to be closer to family and to enjoy the milder winters. She enjoys running, bicycling, yoga, adventure travel and her two Jack Russell Terriers, Rudy and Lucy. Dr. Walton is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics (see www.americanboardortho.com for more information) and a member of the American Association of Orthodontists.
Dr. Walton is a proud sponsor of the annual Friesen 5K Run With The Canes. The fun run benefits the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Eastern North Carolina. Dr. Ravi. K. Sawhney
Dr. Sawhney was born and raised in Raleigh. He went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for both his BS in Biology and his dental degree. After that, he moved west to the University of Washington in Seattle, where he earned his master’s degree in Orthodontics. During his clinical training, Dr. Sawhney became interested in the science of human growth, development, and tissue remodeling. So, he stayed at the UW and completed a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology, while practicing part-time as an orthodontist in downtown Seattle.
In 2002, Dr. Sawhney moved to Washington, DC to apply his expertise as a clinician-scientist in the arena of national health and science policy. He spent 8 years in the federal government—working in the U.S. House of Representatives, the U.S. Senate, the National Institutes of Health, and at the Department of Health and Human Services. During that time, he also served as a volunteer orthodontist treating active duty military servicemen and servicewomen at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda.
Now, Dr. Sawhney splits his time between North Carolina and Washington, DC. In January 2012, Dr. Sawhney started his patient-centered orthodontic practice, sharing Dr. Walton’s state-of-the-art office and top-notch staff—serving busy kids and adults with Friday and Saturday office hours, a science-driven approach, and a thoughtful touch. He also continues to work as a consultant to biomedical innovators in universities and small businesses in the Research Triangle and across the country.
When he’s not moving teeth or playing scientist, Dr. Sawhney loves golf, tennis, and snowboarding, playing guitar in his lousy rock and roll band, and hanging out with his niece Sophie.
